Stanza

Definition: A stanza is a group of lines in a poem together, that usually is separated by spaces in between and has a set pattern of meter and rhyme.

Example:
the air is polluted
and so i breath death

food is scarce
i can't help but grow lean

i should boil my water
but the price of gas

now i smile, cos i see that i need not worry
for i know in tomorrow i will not be

The poem above has 4 stanzas, and each is separated by spaces in between. Each stanza has a pattern that is repeated throughout the poem, except for the last one.

Significant: With different stanza we can separate different ideas within a poem. The poem will be read easier and understand better with the spaces and pauses in between, so they can look back and reread if they didn't understand. A poem that doesn't have stanzas will confused the reader because their eyes can't figure out where they were at as fast if there were stanzas in between to help them.
